Consorting with half-breads, what a disgrace!” said Mirabelle Slytherin as she continued her dinner. “Disgusting.” Agreed her husband, Richard, beside her. Meanwhile Salazar ignored his parents. What did he care about half-bloods and their associates? He had better things to do. “Salazar, darling.” Said Mirabelle to her son, “don’t forget about the Spring Equinox ball next week. Many other families will be there and we must make a good impression. That means you have to come, no excuses.” Salazar hated those events; a bunch of people doing nothing useful with their time. It was sad. But all he said was, “I’ll come.” Mirabelle nodded in contemplation. Slytherins were men of their word, of course, that didn’t mean they couldn’t twist their words to suit their needs. So Mirabelle persisted, “You will come to the Equinox ball? On time?” “Yes.” He said. “Remember to wear a mask.” And they resumed eating their dinner. Some hours later Salazar was in his laboratory working on a new curse when he was interrupted: “Morning, mate!” called a merry voice and Salazar looked up to see a young man with hair of such a light shade of brown, it was almost blond, he was tall as well, square jaw, broad shoulders, and an aura of cheerfulness about him that was infectious. “Morning, Godfric.” Said Salazar in a preoccupied tone, if Godfric heard it he ignored it because he sat next to Salazar and looked over his shoulder. “Ready to try that Patronus spell we’ve been creating?” Salazar nodded, “Yes. I think I know what we’ve been doing wrong.” “So do I,” said his joyful friend, “I think the reason nothing’s been happening is because—” “—we’ve been expecting it to work as an offensive spell rather than—” “—a defensive spell. Right. And there’s also—” “—memories. We have to find one strong—” “—enough—” Finished Godfric, he didn’t look too happy at being outmaneuvered. Salazar looked at him and smiled. “I figured it out first.” “I think you got it wrong my friend. I got it first.” Salazar raised an eyebrow and switched lanes. “I bet I can accomplish the spell before you can.” Godfric smiled. Suddenly they both had their wands out and were summoning in loud voices, “Expecto Patronum!” In front of the two young men stood two glowing forms, one was in the shape of a crouching lion the other a coiled snake, both animals were huge and looked ready to fight anything. “I won.” said Salazar as he put his wand away. “Yeah, right.” Said Godfric as the animals began to fade. “It was only half-a second faster, next time I’ll win.” “Oh yeah?” challenged Salazar and the two smiled in friendly competition… By the time Godfric left the sky had already begun to darken with the setting of the sun. Crickets were beginning their mating calls and Salazar was beginning to put his work away. He had just finished putting his last work-journal in the pocket dimension where he kept all things important to him when he heard a hissing voice say, “They’re moving everything again.” Salazar looked down at the obsidian-colored snake below him. “They’re having a ball next week, they need to move everything.” The serpent began to slither up his right leg until it reached face level. He’d almost forgotten his big Ada had gotten since she’d hatched from her egg. “Hmmm. A ball you say? I wonder if I could have a little fun…” Salazar smiled as he walked through the doorway. He knew what “fun” she was talking about, a lot of the females there would be afraid of snakes. “Well…mother never made me promise I wouldn’t take you…” On his shoulder Ada made a noise Salazar had learned meant a laugh. The days passed quickly and soon it was the night of The Spring Equinox. As promised, Salazar attended on time. He sat in one of the corner tables and watched as everyone else arrived. “Boring.” Said Ada from his robe’s sleeve. “Quiet,” he said, “unless you want to get kicked out.” His mother headed towards him and examined his attire: Salazar was clothed in the finest Kuriy silk a wizard could buy and it was in such a dark shade of green that it was almost black, his black, shoulder-length hair was pulled back at the nape of his neck by a thin green ribbon, and a pattern of small, black reptilian scales framed his eyes and brought out the silver color of them. Mirabelle nodded in approval, “You look handsome.” She said as she framed his face with small hands and kissed his cheek. “Thank you.” She whispered in his ear and strengthened. “There are some people I want you to meet.” She said as she herded him to where a group of people were talking. “Mother, what are you trying to do?” “Whatever do you mean, dear?” she asked in an innocent voice I didn’t believe for a second. “This better not be some of your match making again, I told you; I’ll choose my own bride.” “Now, now, dear. I agreed to that didn’t I?” Maybe she had, but he still wasn’t sure she’d meant it. As they neared the group Salazar noticed the raven-haired young woman standing among them. She was smiling and nodding enigmatically to the old man speaking to her. The two seemed to be having an interesting conversation—something hard to find in get-togethers like these. Seeing the woman, Salazar grew curious, who was this person? He knew he would remember her if he’d been there before (he knew pretty much everyone in the nobility). Mirabelle followed his line of sight and smiled. “Isabella.” She said, “Her parents recently transferred here from Italy, apparently her mother is originally from here. Rather beautiful, no?” “Beautiful.” He agreed and followed his mother to where she stood. As they drew closer, Isabella looked up from her conversation and their gazes met and held, golden eyes stared at silver and Isabella suppressed a shiver. Who was this man? “Ah! Isabella, darling! How are you?” said Mirabelle with a pleasant smile. Isabella smiled in return and gave a slight nod of the head, “Very well, thank you, lady Slytherin. I hope you too are well?” “Yes. Very fine, dear.” Said Mirabelle grandly as she pecked each of her cheeks. “I wonder, have you two met? Isabella, this is my son, Salazar.” “A pleasure to meet you, miss…?” “Right, where are my manners?” said Mirabelle in a flustered tone, “Isabella Rivieri” Rivieri; the family his father talked so much about, “A lovely name.” he said smoothly and Isabelle smiled “Please, call me Bella, our families have known each other for a long time.” Salazar smiled in return and bowed slightly. This woman would definitely be worth his time. Please remember to review and tell me what you think... http://www.harrypotterfanfiction.com |
