Staff Tutorial Updates
After many member requests, the Staff Tutorials have now been updated!

ALL the tutorials, located here (12+), have had at least some minor updates. Most of the revisions include clarifications and expansions on existing information. However...

We have also posted two BRAND NEW tutorials. One for Formatting/Citations and one for Violence. Please review them, but keep in mind, while we think they will be helpful, it is IMPOSSIBLE for us to provide tutorials on every type of material that may or may not be submitted by our authors. This is why we are happy to field specific questions you may have about your own stories in the Ask The Staff section, or though our email or Trouble Ticket system.

HPFF member releases an album!
We've long known that the members of HPFF are a creative bunch. There've been artists that have created incredible images and of course writers that have had work published. Now a HPFF member has written and released an album that is now available on itunes. Yep that's right, she's written all the songs on the album and plays some nstruments as well.

Now that in itself is an achievement, but what makes it even more amazing is that for a first album, it really is very, very good. In fact I'd go so far as to say that you should head over to iTunes and buy it. Catchy tunes and clever lyrics mean you'll find yourself singing along or unknowingly humming the tunes when you least expect it. Go on, do yourself a favour, get the album, start raving to your friends about the wonderful new singer that you've discovered and while you're there, make sure to leave a review.iTunes link

HPFF Internet Safety Week
While the senior staff prepare for their Night of Writing Dangerously, we want to make sure all our members stay safe so we've deemed this week Internet Safety Week @HPFF!

We have always prided ourselves on being a safe, family friendly site and now two very special authors have joined us to help promote and educate everyone on the need for safety online.

Frederick Lane, author of the book Cybertraps for the Young, provides an amazing glimpse into the world on online safety that isn't seen anywhere else. His book talks about how YOU break the law without even realizing it and how these "traps" can end you up in jail or even worse. You can listen to the staff's interview with this author by clicking HERE

Author Sarah Darer Littman took the young adult world by storm with the release of her book Want to Go Private? Holding no punches, she gets right to the heart of the dangers facing internet users in a way that grabs your attention and won't let go for the entire compelling ride. You can listen to the staff's interview with this author by clicking HERE

And now it's your turn! We are a family and family means keeping everyone safe so it's time to spread the word and teach your fellow members about online safety. Listen to the two special author podcasts and post up a blog entry talking about what you learned from the authors and what others need to learn about internet safety.

Contest

The most helpful entry as judged by staff will receive a copy of both books and all entrants will receive an HPFF United wristband (while supplies last).

Welcome to the HPFF Ink Blot Brigade
If you follow the staff on twitter, you know many of us are obsessed with fountain pens and have been working hard at converting everyone else as well. We've even had impromptu lessons in the staff chat about all things fountain pen related. Well, now we've got a place to vent all the ink blot love here in this blog. We'll help you pick your first pen, take care of it and, the funnest part, introduce you to a kaleidoscope of different inks.

HPFF has partnered with Goulet Pens, the absolute best online retailer for fountain pen goods. From pens to inks, from sample sizes to the dearly coveted ink drop club, Goulet Pens is a one stop shop and has unparalleled customer service. The kind folks at Goulet are offering all HPFF members a 5% discount on almost all orders (yes it includes the ink samples!). Just enter HPFF in the coupon field at checkout. Goulet is also the EXCLUSIVE home to the official HPFF ink sampler. In devoted HPFF style, we've hand selected a color for every Hogwarts house and it's only available through Goulet.

To help get started and to welcome Goulet Pens to the HPFF family, we are giving away a prize pack that includes a very special Lamy Safari fountain pen, an ink blot rag, the HPFF house colors ink sampler from Goulet and a selection of ink samples from timeturner's very own collection. To enter just leave a comment on the forum blog (it's at the top of the main page) and a winner will be chosen at random once your senior staff return from San Francisco.

So if you've ever been curious about fountain pens, love the idea of the classic elegance behind them but didn't know where to start, this is the place for you. We won't bog you down with technical minutia but instead help you enjoy writing with pen and ink once again. Join the cool kids (okay, and the HPFF staff) in the HPFF ink blot brigade!

National Novel Writing Month
For those of you already competing in NaNoWriMo, it's nearly a week in and hopefully your wordcount is growing daily and you are reaching your target.

For those of you that it leaves confused and saying "What the goodness is he talking about?" Well I'll tell you. NaNoWriMo is an event during the month of November when people have to write 50000 words of a novel. It's all about personal achievement rather than a prize at the end of the month. There are lots of HPFF members taking part and most of the staff are involved as well.

There is also a one off event in November called the Night of Writing Dangerously, which is basically a charity event where participants in NaNo get together for a day of writing and fun and games. If you're going to be there, keep an eye out for the HPFF staff who will be chugging along trying to reach their count. If you can't be there, visit the forums and keep up with what's happening, or better yet, join up for Nano this year and write a 50,000 word novel, because I know you've got it in you.

Halloween Competition

As the chill of fall settles in and the eve of NaNoWriMo begins,

HPFF staff will be making their way from all corners of the globe to the Burrow for a Halloween Party of their own. Will they meet the Headless Horseman on the way? Will Jay be overtaken by Voldemort? Will timeturner be summoning the spirits to bring Sirius back? Will they make it through the forest safely only to be fooled upon arrival with GW disappearing with Ron or Selene dancing on the table with Nearly Headless Nick?

Tell us what you think will happen at the HPFF Staff Halloween Party!

The first prize winner will receive a $50 gift certificate from buyharrypottercostumes.com just in time for their own Halloween bash. Second prize winner will receive an HPFF pen and wristband. Entries may be no longer than 1,000 words and should be sent to competition [at]harrypotterfanfiction.com and must be received by October 19th at noon. The winners will be announced on the 20th
